Psalm 90:12, “Teach us to make the most of our time, so that we may grow in wisdom.”

Being disciplined with our time is one of life’s greatest challenges.  It often seems that whatever it is we dream of doing, for that, there’s very little time for.

I remember nearing my college graduation dreaming of all the books I would read and Bible study’s I could do in place of the college papers, projects, and text books I had been so focused on.  Certainly then I would have time for more of the things I really enjoyed.

I remember when Filipe and I were dating/engaged and longing for the day we would be married.  Certainly the time and effort we spent finding a place and time to be together would be dramatically shortened when we would finally be living under the same roof.

I remember when I worked full-time and was transitioning to becoming a full-time mom.  I just knew then I would have more time to do things I was really passionate about.

Now with three kids ages five and under, I have very short windows of time to do things for me.  I dream of just a couple hours alone to write, to read, to study in quiet.

But if I wait for the time to come, there will always be something or someone pulling for my time.

It is up to me to make time and to use the time I do have.

Time is not a scavenger hunt waiting for you to find it.

Time is here and now.

The time I have to write is the bookends of my day.  In the early morning hours or in the late evening.  Not my ideal, but it’s all I’ve got.  I can choose to make the most of it, or I can sit and wait for it to come.  And that may be a while.

If I can discipline myself to use the little time I have now, then I will be able to make the most of my time in whatever stage I find myself in.  I feel like I’m currently at the beginning of a five-year transition.  With each child that starts school, I’m finding a little more time on my end.  I’ve got one down, just two more to go.  My goal is that in four years I will be more disciplined and skilled in using my time wisely.

What is something you can start doing today to make the most of your time?
