Have you seen the cover of Time magazine this week? I half expected Michael Jackson to be on the cover(maybe that one is still to come),but no- the cover was a picture of a wedding cake that read “Unfaithfully Yours” above it. My mind immediately went to the Sanford story and all of the other marriage issue in the news recently (from Edwards and Spitzer to Ensign and Jon & Kate). I thought “oh great, another marriage bashing article”.

However, I was pleasantly surprised as I started reading the article by Caitlin Flanagan. She talked about the importance of marriage in society and especially in raising up the next generation.

A couple of quotes that I thought were good:
“No other single force is causing as much measurable hardship in this country as the collapse of marriage.”

“On every single significant outcome related to short-term well-being and long-term success, children from intact, two-parent families outperform those from single-parent households.

“Few things hamper a child as much as not having a father at home” (Maria Kefalas, a sociologist who studies marriage & family issues)

“A lasting marriage is the reward, usually, of hard work and self-sacrifice.”

At least someone in the media is talking about the importance of marriage and it’s effect on society. Something I did think was a little odd and wouldn’t be surprised if Time did it on purpose(yes I do read Time with a bit of skepticism). But, the name of the essay is called “Why Marriage Matters”. Why does the cover say, “Unfaithfully Yours”?

It is sad to see so many marriages fall apart- especially people whom I like and respect. Even though we are all human and make mistakes, there is something about it that is sad and heartbreaking.

I firmly believe that Satan loves nothing more than to destroy marriage and the family unit created and designed by God. In previous small groups, I’ve talked about this issue and would tell girls, “Satan’s strategy in your relationship is to push you as close as possible before you’re married and keep you as far apart as possible after you’re married.” This doesn’t only mean in physical terms, but I believe in other areas as well (emotionally, relationally, spiritually). It definitely seems that this is happening more and more these days. I know that ultimately God is victorious over all things, but it saddens me to see so many people fall to the traps and lies of the enemy.
